Day 58 Marseille.

Sailing into Marseille I had to stop and check myself.... looking out to the baron looking mountains and structures I thought I had gone into a deep sleep and woken up in Aqaba.  Expecting to see a lush green countryside the mountains around Marseille are bare.  Apparently the harsh winds are to blame.

Our guide for today was Marion, the youngest tour guide we have had all trip! She spoke English perfectly as she had spent 12 months in Australia learning. Our first call was to Avignon to see the famous bridge that inspired children’s song Sur le Pont d’Avignon.  Those old enough sang the song and others just danced to it..

Then Marion walked us through the town which was coming alive as they were getting ready to start their version of city to Surf.  We continued on for a tour of the Palace of the Popes covering most of the important parts. Nine pontiffs occupied this palace at the time that they were in exile.

After leaving Avignon we drove to Gordes, a French hill town where we had spare time to grab and lunch and explore the village. From Gordes we drove to Roussillon famous for it’s Ochre.  You can see the colours from the landscape used to make the colours of the buildings.  This little village is very arty as you can imagine and also a good spot to try a Gelato. As you will from the pictures the boys came in handy when we needed to reserve a parking spot whilst Marion drove around the block.

To continue our circuit of this part of France it was time to try some French wine.  With the expectation of greatness we were a little disappointment with the taste of wine we were served, so the only person who does not drink wine did manage to buy 2 bottles of freshly juiced apricot nectar.

Another port off our list and now heading towards the last of our European Countries.
